Werder Bremen won the 100th North Derby against Hamburg with a 1-0 victory on the 23rd match day of the Bundesliga. Zlatko Junuzovic scored the only goal of the match to secure the Green-Whites a deserved win and three very important points.

Three changes
Werder head coach Robin Dutt made three changes to his starting line-up. Assa Lukimya replaced Felix Kroos (suspended), Santiago Garcia played for Luca Caldirola (suspended) and Aaron Hunt started for Cedrick Makiadi.

Junuzovic scores
The Green-Whites had a strong start in front of 42,100 spectators at a sold-out Weser Stadium and were the better team in a hard-fought match. Werder used an offensive attitude and aggressiveness to put the Hamburg defence under pressure. The Green-Whites were rewarded for their commitment in the 19th minute. After a wonderful pass from Hunt into the area, Junuzovic used his chance to make it 1-0.

Werder better
Werder remained the better team and Hamburg keeper Rene Adler was barely able to fend Garcia's cross over the bar in the 29th minute. On the ensuing corner, Nils Petersen just barely missed his good header chance. Werder were lucky to still be ahead in the 43rd minute as Hakan Calhanoglu struck the crossbar from 15 yards out. After a strong first 45 minutes, Werder were ahead 1-0 going into the break.

Wolf makes save
The spectators saw an intensive second half as well as Rafael van der Vaart and the rest of the Hamburg attack pushed forward looking for the equaliser, pressuring the Green-Whites defence. Bremen keeper Raphael Wolf did a fine job saving a dangerous long distance shot by Milan Badeli in the 56th minute to keep Werder ahead.

Chance for Junuzovic
Junuzovic had a good chance to double the lead in the 69th minute on a counter attack but his shot from 17 yards hit the left post. Adler made a good save on Lukimya's header just a minute later. Adler was again strong in the 74th minute, saving Ludovic Obraniak's attempt. And then Petr Jiracek stopped Garcia's header on the line in the 75th minute.

Deserved victory
Werder were the better team in the match as Hamburg failed to create a lot of chances, giving Dutt's team three deserved points after a very strong performance.
