Werder Bremen could only collect one point in their start to the second half of the Bundesliga season, coming up with a subpar performance in a 0-0 draw at home against Eintracht Braunschweig.

Two changes
Werder head coach Robin Dutt made two changes to his starting line-up compared to the victory to end 2013 against Bayer Leverkusen with Felix Kroos replacing Cedrick Makiadi, who missed the match at the last minute with thigh problems; and Zlatko Junuzovic playing for Franco Di Santo. Despite temperatures of -7 degrees, Weser Stadium was nearly sold out with 41,000 spectators.

Missed chances
The Green-Whites had the somewhat better start though they were lucky that Santiago Garcia got in the way in the last second to block away a shot from Havard Nielsen. At the other end, Nils Petersen missed a chance, hitting only the side netting from six yards out after a pass from Eljero Elia. Theo Gebre Selassie was unable to use his header chance two minutes later and then Nielsen headed another chance directly into the arms of Wolf five minutes before the break, leaving the game knotted at 0-0 going into intermission.

Philipp Bargfrede during the game against Eintracht Braunschweig.

Bargfrede hits the post
Bremen had some bad luck just three minutes after the re-start as Philipp Bargfrede's shot from 23 yards went off the right post. A header by Garcia was cleared at the line two minutes later as the Green-Whites pushed forward looking for the goal at Weser Stadium.

Yildirim for Junuzovic
But Werder were unable to keep up the pressure and the game became more even again, with most of the action taking place in the midfield as Bremen would not allow Braunschweig to create chances. Dutt responded to the lack of offence and brought on Özkan Yildirim for Junuzovic after 82 minutes.

No final offensive push
The substitution did not help Werder's game much as the guests did well defending in front of their goal. In the end, Werder had to accept a 0-0 draw against the promoted side, leaving the Green-Whites in 11th place after 18 match days.
