Werder Bremen fought to a 1-1 draw on the road and undermanned against Wolfsburg on the 13th game day of the Bundesliga. Marko Arnautovic gave the Green-Whites the lead in the 35th minute, but Werder went a man down after 62 minutes on a yellow-red card for Lukas Schmitz. And Bas Dost grabbed the equaliser for Wolfsburg. Bremen were able to improve to sixth place on the table with the point.

Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf made just one change to his line-up with Sebastian Prödl replacing the suspended Assani Lukimya in the backline. In addition, captain Clemens Fritz was back on the team squad but only on the bench. Bremen started the match more offensively but Nils Petersen could not beat Wolfsburg keeper Diego Benaglio in the seventh minute. And Arnautovic shot over the bar in the 23rd minute.

Wolfsburg twice against post, Arnautovic scores
Wolfsburg twice found only the framework as Bremen defender Sokratis deflected Makoto Hasebe's shot off the right post in the 31st minute. The hosts struck the other post in the 34th minute on Dost's header. Bremen made Wolfsburg pay for their inefficiency in taking the lead a minute later. Eljero Elia raced to the goalline left of goal and poked a pass through the defence to the right side where Arnautovic struck home back to the left side to make it 1-0. And that was the lead at half-time.

Klaus Allofs and Thomas Schaaf.

Yellow-red for Schmitz, then equaliser
The Green-Whites did not make a change for the second half but Schaaf's team went a man down after 62 minutes as Schmitz was shown his second card on a tackle against Vieirinha. Wolfsburg equalised in the 64th minute on a counter attack as Diego passed a throughball to Vieirinha who one-timed a cross to the left side where Dost only had to slot home. Wolfsburg were close to taking the lead a minute later but Sokratis cleared Diego's shot at the line.

Hunt hits post
Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz made two strong saves against Dost in the 73rd minute and Ivica Olic three minutes later. Werder also struck the framework in the 82nd minute on a free kick by Aaron Hunt. Fritz celebrated his comeback, being subbed in for Arnautovic after 82 minutes. And the Green-Whites fought to secure the 1-1 draw.
