Werder Bremen finished off their 2012 calendar year with a 1-1 draw at home against Nuremberg on the 17th game day of the Bundesliga. Timo Gebhart put Nuremberg ahead late before Nils Petersen secured the Green-Whites at least a draw so that Werder will spend the winter break in 12th place.
Hunt for Fritz
Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf made one substitution from the last match with Aaron Hunt coming back to the starting line-up after his calf problems, sending Clemens Fritz to the bench.
Chance for De Bruyne
The Green-Whites started well into the contest and had a chance after eight minutes as Kevin De Bruyne fought through two Nuremberg defenders and shot low from 13 yards but hit only the outside of the post. Werder appeared to have scored in the 14th minute Nils Petersen was ruled offside.
0-0 at the break
Bremen nearly took the lead in the 20th minute as Nuremberg's Per Nilsson tried to clear a free kick by Hunt but his keeper Raphael Schäfer made a superb stop. De Bruyne had another opportunity in the 34th minute but Schäfer saved the Belgian's attempt. Marko Arnautovic was unable to convert from about five yards out three minutes later as the match was deadlocked at 0-0 at the break.
Mielitz with save
The guests created their first superb chance after 54 minutes with a cross into the area to Markus Feulner at the right post, but Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz had a great reaction to keep the ball out of the goal and the Green-Whites in the game.

Twice bad luck
Werder were unlucky at the hour mark as Theo Gebre Selassie crossed into the box but Petersen found only the crossbar. De Bruyne struck the left post in the 62nd minute with a long distance shot.
Nuremberg take lead
The Werder fans seemed ready to accept a 0-0 draw when Gebhart shocked the Green-Whites supporters in the 82nd minute, taking a pass from Javier Pinola and striking it past Mielitz inside the right post from 17 yards. Werder did not give up and were rewarded for their motivation.
Petersen scores
In the 88th minute, De Bruyne unleashed a low strike from about 15 yards out which Petersen deflected past Schäfer, giving Werder at least the 1-1 draw against Nuremberg.
