Werder Bremen came up with a strong showing but ended up losing their home match against FC Schalke 04 2-0 on the 28th game day of the Bundesliga, leaving the Green-Whites 14th on the table. The goals for Schalke were scored by Julian Draxler and Ciprian Marica.
Six players out
Head coach Thomas Schaaf had to make due without six players as Lukas Schmitz (stomach), Theodor Gebre Selassie (knee), Mehmet Ekici (adductors), Clemens Fritz (broken rib and cheekbone), Zlatko Junuzovic (laceration on knee) and Philipp Bargfrede all missed the match. There were three changes to the line-up with Sebastian Prödl, Eljero Elia and Marko Arnautovic filling in for Gebre Selassie, Mehmet Ekici and Bargfrede.
Numerous chances
Werder were very concentrated from the start against Schalke and were the better team in the first half in front of 42,100 fans in the sold-out Weser Stadium. The Green-Whites came up with a number of chances through Arnautovic (4th), Nils Petersen (10th) and Kevin De Bruyen (11th and 16th) - though none of them could be converted as Schalke keeper Timo Hildebrand played well. The teams went into the changing rooms deadlocked at 0-0.

Draxler scores
The second half began with a good chance for Schalke as Joel Matip got a head on a free kick but Bremen keeper Sebastian Mielitz made a superb save. But Mielitz was beaten on a counter-attack in the 51st minute as the Werder backline could not get the ball under control and Draxler scored from 17 yards out for a 1-0 lead for Schalke.
Hunt unlucky
Aaron Hunt just missed equalising the match in the 56th minute as his free kick sailed just inches wide of the framework. Werder continued to push forward looking for the equaliser but Schalke were much more dangerous in the second half and all told the better team.
Marica makes it 2-0
Schakle doubled the lead and finished off the match with the goal to make it 2-0 in the 70th minute. Assani Lukimya's pass to Mielitz proved too short with Raffael latching onto it and passing over to Marica, who re-directed the ball in. Werder could never find their way back into the match after that, suffering another bitter defeat.
