Werder Bremen came back from an early deficit to fight for a 1-1 draw at 1. FSV Mainz 05 on the 27th match day of the Bundesliga. Adam Szalai gave Mainz the lead in the first minute before Aaron Hunt equalised for Werder in the second half.
Three changes
Werder coach Thomas Schaaf made three changes to his starting line-up with Philipp Bargfrede, Mehmet Ekici and Hunt playing for Lukas Schmitz, Mateo Plavlovic and Zlatko Junuzovic. In addition, Sokratis moved into the centre back spot.
Early Mainz goal
Werder came up with a poor start and conceded the first goal after just 13 seconds. After an erroneous pass from Assani Lukimya, Szalai collected a ball from Andreas Ivanschitz before hitting home to make it 1-0.

No goal chances
Schaaf's team needed a while before getting over the shock of the early goal but eventually fought back into the match. Werder, however, were missing the perseverance to really come up with good chances, going into the break down 1-0.
Mielitz makes saves
Werder came out of the changing room with a lot of motivation but the hosts had the first chance. Bremen keeper Sebastian Mielitz started his superb second half with an excellent chance by Ivanschitz in the 51st minute. Mielitz stopped another great opportunity by Mainz on Nicolai Müller's shot in the 67th minute.
Hunt scores
Werder scored the much-celebrated 1-1 equaliser in the 69th minute as Kevin De Bruyne passed to Marko Arnautovic, who crossed into the middle where Hunt pushed the ball over the line. By coming back from the early deficit, Werder earned an important point with a 1-1 draw at FSV Mainz 05.
