Werder Bremen beat FSV Mainz 05 2-1 at home on Sunday on the 10th game day of the Bundesliga to jump from 12th place on the table to seventh with 14 points. Interim captain Aaron Hunt scored both goals for Werder with Adam Szalai tallying the equaliser for Mainz.
Hunt scores
Head coach Thomas Schaaf made no changes to his line-up against Mainz, sending the same starting eleven which earned a 1-1 draw at Greuther Fürth. The some 40,000 spectators at Weser Stadium saw Werder grab the lead after just 11 minutes. After Mainz lost a ball in the midfield, Nils Petersen fed a fine through ball to Hunt, who finished with his right foot for a 1-0 lead.
Mielitz with fine save
Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz made a great save just 60 seconds later against Nicolai Müller's dangerous attempt. At the other end, Eljero Elia blasted his shot off the crossbar as Werder missed a chance to double the lead. The match remained up-tempo and Mainz gave the Werder defence problems with their counter attacks.

Prödl makes error
After 30 minutes, Sebastian Prödl played a back-pass to Mielitz but Andreas Ivanschitz latched onto it and in essence had an empty goal from 18 yards but shot wide as Schaaf's team dodged a bullet. And the Green-Whites led 1-0 at the break.
Lukimya for Sokratis
Schaaf was forced to sub out the injured defensive star Sokratis for Assani Lukimya in the backline. And the match remained highly entertaining. Petersen just missed scoring from 17 yards and Mielitz made a fine save on a header by Ivanschitz.
Szalai heads in equaliser
The Werder defence suffered a lapse in concentration in the 64th minute and Szalai had plenty of space to head in a corner from the left side to make it 1-1. Schaaf's team pushed forward thereafter looking for the winner and began to gain an advantage with their passion and commitment.
Hunt's winner
Werder benefited from their efforts in the 86th minute as Hunt curled a free kick from 17 yards into the right corner to make it 2-1. And that proved to be the winner as the Green-Whites held off a late push by Mainz for the important home victory.
