Werder Bremen suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat at home at the hands of Bayer 04 Leverkusen on the 14th game day of the Bundesliga. Nils Petersen scored the only goal for head coach Thomas Schaaf's team while Gonzalo Castro tallied twice for Leverkusen and Simon Rolfes and Jens Hegeler both added single goals for the guests. The defeat drops the Green-Whites down to 12th place on the table with 18 points.
Two changes
Schaaf made two changes to his starting line-up with Aleksandar Ignjovski and Niclas Füllkrug replacing Lukas Schmitz (yellow-red suspension) and Marko Arnautovic (cold). Both teams had early chances with Andre Schürrle going just wide in the eighth minute for Leverkusen and Füllkrug's shot coming close six minutes later.
Castro gives Leverkusen lead
Leverkusen took the lead 1-0 in the 31st minute as Stefan Kiessling passed to Daniel Carvajal, whose shot was stopped by Bremen keeper Sebastian Mielitz but the loose ball went to Castro, who blasted home into the lower left corner of the empty net. Bremen nearly equalized six minutes later but Aaron Hunt's shot went just left. And the Green-Whites went into the changing rooms down 1-0.

Petersen answers Castro's second goal
Leverkusen struck again in the 52nd minute as Lars Bender fed a perfect through ball to Castro, who went through four defenders and struck his left foot shot past Mielitz to make it 2-0. Bremen were able to pull a goal back in the 54th minute for a 2-1 score with Hunt crossing from the right side to Petersen, who jumped high to head past Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno just inside the left post.
Rolfes, Hegeler double strike too much
Schaaf tried to change the game and brought on Clemens Fritz for Füllkrug after 66 minutes and Joseph Akpala for Zlatko Junuzovic in the 73rd minute. But Rolfes re-established the two-goal lead 3-1 after 74 minutes as Kiessling's attempt was blocked by Mielitz, but the striker headed a pass into the path of the Leverkusen captain, who hit home into the lower left corner. And Hegeler ended all Bremen hopes in the 79th minute running onto a Schürrle through ball and beating Mielitz to the right post for the final 4-1 scoreline.
