Werder Bremen won the 97th North Derby against Hamburg with a strong 2-0 victory and their first three points of the new Bundesliga season. Aaron Hunt scored from the spot for Werder Bremen while Nils Petersen hit his first goal for the Green-Whites.
Petersen starts game
A sold-out crowd of 42,100 fans at Weser Stadium saw an intensive, up-tempo and exciting derby between Werder and Hamburg. Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf made one change to his starting line-up with Petersen starting for Aleksandar Ignovski while Clemens Fritz started on the left side of the defence.
Chance for Werder
Bremen had the run of play from the beginning and nearly went ahead after just four minutes as Petersen's header was deflected by Hamburg keeper Rene Adler off the lower half of the crossbar and off the line.

Hunt misses penalty
Bremen were the better team but could not take advantage of a penalty three minutes before the break as Adler blocked Hunt's spot kick to the lower right post after Eljero Elia was taken down by Hamburg defender Jeffrey Bruma. And the game was 0-0 at the break
Hunt converts penalty
Bremen took the lead 1-0 in the 51st minute as Hunt this time beat Adler from the point - again to the right side but higher and harder - after Dennis Aogo lost a ball in his own box and then fouled Petersen.
Petersen scores first goal
Petersen picked up a goal for himself in the 67th minute as Petr Jiracek lost a ball to Clemens Fritz, who immediately passed forward to Hunt and the earlier goal scorer fed a through ball to Petersen, who beat Adler through the legs for a 2-0 lead. And that was enough for a 2-0 victory in the 97th derby
