Werder Bremen came up with a strong performance and beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-0 at home in Weser Stadium on the eighth match day of the Bundesliga. Nils Petersen, Marko Arnautovic, Niclas Füllkrug and Zlatko Junuzovic scored the goals for the Green-Whites. Werder jumped to ninth place with the victory.
Three changes
Head coach Thomas Schaaf made three changes to his line-up with Assani Lukimya and Theodor Gebre Selassie replacing the injured Clemens Fritz and Sebastian Prödl in the back line and Petersen coming on for Joseph Akpala in attack.
Werder dominate
A sold out crowd of 42,100 spectators at Weser Stadium saw a strong showing by the Green-Whites from the very start. Werder played with plenty of motivation and at a high tempo, controlling the match and forcing the Mönchengladbach into their own half. Still, Gladbach were dangerous with the counter attack and Bremen were lucky in the 18th minute that Granit Xhaka's shot from 17 yards just barely missed the target. And then Havard Nordveit struck only the crossbar after a corner kick shortly thereafter.

Petersen and Arnautovic score
Werder grabbed the lead in the 38th minute as Petersen rose to head home Kevin De Bruyne's corner for the 1-0 cushion. Schaaf's men continued to push forward and doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the 44th minute with Aaron Hunt delivering a wonderful pass to Arnautovic and the Austrian took advantage of the opportunity to make it 2-0 - which was also the lead at the break for Werder.
Chance for Werder
The spectators saw more entertaining football in the second half. In the 50th minute, Eljero Elia had some fine dribbling to create space for Arnautovic, who was unable to add a second goal. And at the other end, Xhata unleashed a blast from nearly 30 yards that went just inches over the crossbar.
Füllkrug makes it 3-0
The Green-Whites remained the dominating team even though Mönchengladbach were investing more in the game. The next big chance went to Hunt, who had space but watched his shot get blocked away. Arnautovic sent his attempt just wide right in the 70th minute before Füllkrug, who came on for Elia, pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 75th minute, scoring on a great cross from Arnautovic. And then Junuzovic finished off the scoring for Werder, making it 4-0 in the 86th minute - finishing off a great football evening as well.
