Werder Bremen picked up a crucial 2-1 victory at SC Freiburg, coming back from a 1-0 deficit to gain three important points on the fifth game day of the Bundesliga. Jonathan Schmid gave Freiburg the lead before Joseph Akpala and Aaron Hunt tallied for the Green-Whites. The victory gives Werder seven points for seventh place on the table - two points from the international ranks.

Schaaf makes two changes
As opposed to the 2-2 draw against VfB Stuttgart, head coach Thomas Schaaf made two changes with Lukas Schmitz coming in for Theo Gebre Selassie in the back line while Akpala started in place of Nils Petersen. The match at Mage Solar Stadium was an intensive battle from the start with both teams providing a hard fight.

Schmid scores
The Green-Whites had difficulties getting the hosts under control and fell behind in the 36th minute. A foul at the edge of the box gave Freiburg a set piece in a dangerous position and Schmid converted his free kick for a 1-0 Freiburg lead. And Werder went into the break down 1-0.

Akpala equalises
Werder came out of the changing room in strong fashion with keeper Sebastian Mielitz making a superb save on Max Kruse's attempt in the 46th minute. And Werder equalised in the 48th minute 1-1 with Eljero Elia's pass finding Marko Arnautovic for a pass back to Akpala, who one-timed past Freiburg keeper Oliver Baumann.

Hunt take lead 2-1
Werder were the better team after that, playing excellent football and grabbing the lead in the 59th minute. Kevin de Bruyne worked through the left side and passed into the middle for Hunt, who blasted past Baumann to make it 2-1.

Freiburg nearly equalised in the 86th minute as Daniel Caligiuri hit the right post and then Schmid's free kick deep in injury time from the left side went just wide of the far right post, giving Bremen the crucial three points.
