Werder Bremen lost their home match against SC Freiburg 3-2 in a wild showdown on the 22nd match day of the Bundesliga. Max Kruse, Daniel Caligiuri (penalty) and Matthias Ginter scored the goals for Freiburg while Nils Petersen tallied a brace for Werder.

Prödl and Fritz in starting line-up
Head coach Thomas Schaaf made two changes to his starting line-up with Sokratis and Aaron Hunt making way for Sebastian Prödl and Clemens Fritz.

Strong beginning
A crowd of 36,000 spectators at Bremen's Weser Stadium saw a turbulent and exciting first 45 minutes in which Schaaf's team had a lot of good but also bad moments. Werder began the match strong with Prödl (sixth minute), Petersen (seventh) and Lukas Schmitz (17th) all failing to convert chances.

Lead for Freiburg
Freiburg found their way into the game and the Green-Whites' defence began to make mistakes. Kruse was allowed to have space in the 35th minute and he beat Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz from 17 yards for a 1-0 lead. The advantage was deserved as Freiburg had taken control of the match.

Petersen equalizes
Werder came up with the perfect answer on a counter attack as Kevin De Bruyne played a ball over to Petersen who blasted home from 13 yards out to make it 1-1 in the 39th minute. The teams went into the break deadlocked at 1-1.

Penalty for Freiburg
The second half began just as wild as the first half ended as Zlatko Junuzovic headed off the crossbar in the 48th minute. Aleksandar Ignjovski then felled Caligiuri in the 53rd minute in the box and Caligiuri converted from the spot to make it 2-1 for Freiburg.

Petersen scores again
Werder answered straight away again as Marko Arnautovic's cross from the right side landed eventually with Petersen, who hit home from six yards out to make it 2-2 in the 64th minute. Petersen nearly gave Werder the lead a minute later but headed against the crossbar.

Ginter shocks Werder
Freiburg went ahead again in the 71st minute as Karim Guédé first hit the crossbar and the rebound went to Ginter, who found the back of the net to make it 3-2 for Freiburg. Werder pushed forward looking for the third equalizer but Petersen's header found only the post in the 75th minute.
