Werder Bremen lost the 98th North Derby with Hamburg 3-2 in a wild and intensive match on the 19th game day. Son Heung Min Son, Dennis Aogo and Artjoms Rudnevs scored the goals for Hamburg while Assani Lukimya and Sokratis tallied for Werder. Bremen finished the game with nine players as both Clemens Fritz and Marko Arnautovic were shown yellow-red cards.

Three changes

Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf made three changes to his line-up after the disaster against Dortmund with Lukimya, Aleksandar Ignjovski and Mehmet Ekici coming on for Sebastian Prödl, Aaron Hunt and Eljero Elia. Arnautovic was back in the roster after his suspension but started on the bench after recovering from his stomach flu.

Early lead

Some 57,000 spectators in Hamburg immediately saw a match with derby character and lots of tempo. Werder started strong and took the lead 1-0 after eight minutes as Ignjovski crossed from the right side and Lukimya headed into the lower left corner with the back of his head.

Hamburg pushed forward looking for the equaliser and the Green-Whites were dangerous on the counter-attack in a fine match. Werder was put more and more under pressure and Hamburg finally equalised 1-1 in the 23rd minute with Son dribbling past Theo Gebre Selassie before blasting it by Sebatian Mielitz into the right netting. The teams went into the break deadlocked at 1-1.

Aogo, Rudnevs score

Werder had a horrible start to the second half as Dennis Diekmeier's cross from the right side landed eventually with Aogo, who gave Hamburg a 2-1 lead 25 seconds after the re-start though it appeared that Aogo had handled the ball beforehand. Hamburg increased the advantage to 3-1 in the 52nd minute with Rudnevs blasting homr Aogo's cross from the left side.

Sokratis trims deficit

The wild and fantastic match continued as Soktratis trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the 54th minute, shooting from 18 yards out under Hamburg keeper Rene Adler. Werder continued to fight for the equaliser and Schaaf brought on Arnautovic after 56 minutes. The Green-Whites went a man down in the 80th minute as Fritz was shown his second warning on a foul against Tolgay Arslan. Werder saw Arnautovic get sent off in the first minute of stoppage time for two successive warnings. And Hamburg finished off with the 3-2 victory.
