Fight not rewarded – 2-1 loss in Dortmund

Werder Bremen displayed a strong performance but still lost their difficult opening match of the new Bundesliga season with a 2-1 defeat at German champions Borussia Dortmund. Early deficit

A sold-out crowd of 80,645 at Signal Iduna Park saw an interesting and exciting match from the beginning - and one in which Thomas Schaaf's team fell behind 1-0 after 11 minutes. Aleksandar Ignjovski was late to a ball from the midfield to Reus and keeper Sebastian Mielitz had no chance thereafter against the shot from the German international from 14 yards.

Arnautovic hits post

At the other end, Eljero Elia could not beat Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller on a good attempt in the 18th minute. Marko Arnautovic had some bad luck in the 24th minute as his blast went off the post. Both teams fought hard after that point though the German champs had a slight advantage and Werder went into the changing rooms down 1-0 at the break.

Gebre Selassie equalises

Werder fought hard to avoid the loss and had another chance in the 57th minute as Sebastian Prödl's header went just wide. The Werder fans could finally cheer in the 75th minute as Gebre Selassie headed in Arnautovic's cross into the goal to make it 1-1.

Götze scores winner

But the Green-Whites didn't have long to celebrate the tied score as the substitute Götze latched onto a pass from Robert Lewandowski to make it 2-1 in the 81sth minute as Mielitz again had no chance. Werder were determined to equalise again. But they could not beat the Dortmund defence again and lost 2-1.
