Werder Bremen saw their winless streak extended to 10 matches as they lost their road match against Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1-0 in a good performance on the 31st game day in the Bundesliga. Stefan Kießling scored the only goal of the match from the spot.

Four changes in starting line-up
Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf was without the suspended Marko Arnautovic and Eljero Elia and was also missing Kevin De Bruyne with a thigh problem. All told, Schaaf made four changes to his starting line-up with Aleksandar Ignjovski, Felix Kroos, Özkan Yildrim and Nils Petersen replacing Arnautovic, De Bruyne, Theo Gebre Selassie and Assani Lukimya.

1-0 through Kießling

Werder had the better start to the match and had the first chance with Philipp Bargfrede's shot in the ninth minute sailing just wide. Leverkusen took the lead in the 35th minute as Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz fouled Sidney Sam in the box and Kießling converted the penalty to make it 1-0. Despite being behind, Werder remained strong and played well though they could not make up the deficit, trailing 1-0 at the break.

Werder push forward looking for equaliser
With the support of about 3,000 Werder fans in Leverkusen, Schaaf's team tried to equalise but had to survive some good chances by Leverkusen. The Green-Whites continued to try and pressure the hosts but were lacking the force on offence.

Missed chances
Sebastian Prödl, for example, could not get enough force behind his shot off an Aaron Hunt cross in the 84th minute as Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno had no problem saving it. Bargfrede's blast three minutes later sailed off target as well. And Werder were left to digest a 1-0 defeat in Leverkusen.
