With their new head coach Marcus Song, Freiburg hope to continue to establish themselves in the Bundesliga on Saturday 20 August 2011 at 3:30 p.m. at Weser Stadium. The Green-Whites faced off with Freiburg in a test match on 19 July during preparations and won 4-3. Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf knows the game will be anything but easy. "Freiburg has always lived off their strength of play. We experienced it in the test how quickly situations can change. They have a team that can do great things," said Schaaf.
Freiburg have not started well in the 2011-12 season, losing in the German DFB Cup at Unterhaching, following by a 2-2 draw in Augsburg and a 2-1 loss at home against Mainz. But the team "worked very courageously," said Song about his team. "We have to continue this approach." Schaaf was clear what will be needed on Saturday. "We are very concentrated on our tasks, which also includes shutting down the opponents on defence. We have to put them under pressure and force them into mistakes," said Schaaf. The unnecessary loss in Leverkusen showed "that we are not that certain in our actions as we should be," said Schaaf.
"We are a big step further than we were last season. We worked well on many things," said Schaaf. "But we are not far enough to do everything completely correct. We are still missing the levelheadedness to control all things on offence and defence." Manager Klaus Allofs made it clear what was needed for a good start. "The logical consequence to push forward again and build upon the Kaiserslautern victory and beat Freiburg," said Allofs.
