The Augsburg players were celebrating together after the final whistle in Mainz with their fans. It was the club's first victory ever in the Bundesliga. Those who saw the beaming face of coach Jos Luhukay afterwards could hardly believe what Augsburg manager Andreas Retting said just two days later: "We are not euphoric, just the way we were not depressed before hand when it didn't work out."
But Rettig did not want to hide the fact that the 1-0 win over Mainz was not immensely important for the promoted club. "Maybe some people believed that we would never win in the first division," said Retting. But Augsburg showed all doubters after four draws and four defeats with the first Bundesliga victory on the ninth game day.
"They have advanced quite a bit in Augsburg in the last couple years," praised Werder coach Thomas Schaaf. But he did not want to hear anything about an easy match for his favoured Green-Whites. Retting and Luhukay meanwhile are working on dampening the euphoria as Retting told the Kreiszeitung that Augsburg on their tip toes only reach Bremen's chin. "They are a great team, we have to really concentrate once again," added Luhukay. But if Augsburg can implement Luhukay's plans they can be a dangerous team. "They have a very compact team," said Schaaf. "It will be important for them now to also bring their home fans into the game."
Augsburg will definitely have confidence when they welcome Werder Bremen in the sold-out SGL arena. "We can beat every opponent," the goal scorer against Mainz Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker told Bild.
