The rumour that started late Wednesday evening after the final whistle of Hoffenheim's 1-0 loss to Greuther Fürth in the German DFB Cup quarter-final was confirmed the next day as Hoffenheim sacked head coach Holger Stanislawski just days before the match at Werder Bremen (Saturday, 11 February 2012 at 3:30 p.m. at Weser Stadium).

Trend heading downward

The current number eight in the table has collected just one victory from its last 10 Bundesliga matches. But the manner in which the team played wore on the patience of those in charge. "I am sad to see that Stani can no longer do his job," said Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf. "I think he is a good guy and motivated coach who has good ideas on how football should be played. And he has shown that with his teams. It's too bad that it didn't work out in Hoffenheim."

The sporting misery may also be due to the many player departures. Vedad Ibisevic left for Stuttgart and Chinedu Obasi went to Schalke, joining a list of others to leave including Demba Ba, Carlos Eduardo and Luiz Gustavo. And the current performances show that the team cannot compensate for the immense loss in quality. But Schaaf said the team still has high potential. "They stand for good, quick, high intense football. And that shines through every now and again. But it hasn't been as consistent as previously," said Schaaf.

Markus Babbel, who recently was sacked at Hertha Berlin, will take over as new Hoffenheim coach. "We want to try to bring the team back on course. If I were not convinced I could do that I would not have taken the job. We have to bring the team back to their strengths," said Babbel. Werder for their part are only thinking of themselves. "For Hoffenheim, Saturday is a big deal. And we want to solidify our position," said Werder manager Klaus Allofs
