Werder coach Thomas Schaaf was bombarded with questions at the press conference before the away match against Hertha Berlin (Saturday 3:30 p.m.) because former long-time Werder coach Otto Rehhagel is now Berlin's head coach.

What is your relationship? How often do you see each other? What memories remain? What kind of things did you learn from him? What kind of advice can you give him in the current situation with his team? "I gladly will accept some but I will stay away from giving Otto Rehhagel advice," said Werder coach Thomas Schaaf respectfully. Otto Rehhagel is not just any former master of his craft. The Essen native was head coach along the Weser for 14 years between 1981 and 1995, winning two German league championships, two German DFB Cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup. He won the German league title with promoted side Kaiserslautern and guided Greece to the European Championship trophy. Now he has been called in to save Berlin from relegation.

Two successful coaches with a shared past: Thomas Schaaf und Otto Rehhagel.

Rehhagel's team lost his first match away from home 3-0 at Augsburg. "It is three minutes to midnight and it's a dance on the razor's edge," said Rehhagel afterwards. After the loss in Augsburg, Hertha have not collected a single point in the second half of the season with a 1-14 goal differential. Now it's up to Rehhagel to stop the negative series, preferably on Saturday at Olympic Stadium. Schaaf is expecting a difficult match. "I expect a strong Hertha team. Nothing else for me comes into question. Their game relies on them standing compactly and working intensively on defence. But they also have good people on offence. You really must watch out. I hope that we can persevere. We need all the points we can get," said Schaaf.
