Werder Bremen suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home against Nuremberg on the 23rd game day of the Bundesliga. Alexander Esswein scored the only goal of the game for the guests.
No changes
Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf did not make any changes to his line-up with Tim Wiese playing his 250th Bundesliga match. The game was very even in the early going with Nuremberg standing very compact defensively. Wiese showed off his skills superbly in the 38th minute with a great save on a header by Tomas Pekhart. The Green Whites were close to grabbing a goal in the 43rd minute but Claudio Pizarro's shot went just inches wide right. And the teams went into the changing room deadlocked at 0-0.

Pizarro hits post
Schaaf kept the same line-up in the second half and his team nearly took the lead in the 49th minute as Pizarro hit the left upright - the 15th time this season that the Green-Whites hit the goal framework. Marko Marin was close in the 62nd minute but shot just inches wide right from near distance.
Esswein scores game-winner
Nuremberg proved more efficient and went ahead 1-0 after 65 minutes as Esswein struck home a crossing pass by Jens Hegeler past Wiese. Bremen pushed forward at the end and nearly got the equaliser in the 90th minute but Nuremberg's Adam Hlousek cleared Pizarro's shot at the goal line. And the Green-Whites were unable to confirm their victory from last weekend in the North Derby at Hamburg.
