Werder Bremen lost their home match against Mainz 3-0 on Saturday at Weser Stadium on the 28th game day of the Bundesliga, failing to pick up three critical points in the fight for the international spots. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored two goals for Mainz and Adam Szalai struck once.
Three changes
Werder coach Thomas Schaaf made three changes to his starting line-up with Tim Wiese coming back from his facial injury to take over from Sebastian Mielitz in goal. In addition, Claudio Pizarro and Philipp Bargfrede played for Lukas Schmitz and Niclas Füllkrug. The Green-Whites started well in the game but could not come up with the necessary final push on offense.
Wiese beaten
Werder fell behind in the 19th minute on a counter attack as Andreas Invanschitz passed to Szalai, who got passed Francois Affolter and beat Wiese from 11 yards. Bremen had a chance to equalise just before the break as Pizarro passed to Zlatko Junuzovic but his shot was stopped by Mainz's keeper. And Bremen trailed 1-0 at the break.

Shock after the break
Schaaf reacted at halftime to his team's deficit, bringing on Marko Marin as an additional offensive force for Aleksandar Ignjovski. But the Green-Whites were shocked shortly after the break as Wiese had to grab behind him in the 48th minute. Choupo-Moting fought past Florian Hartherz and eventually pushed the lead to 2-0
Choupo-Moting decides the game
Werder threw all they had forward trying to pull a goal back. In the 72nd minute, Naldo hammered a free kick towards the Mainz goal, but the shot was stopped by the keeper. And just 120 seconds later, Choupo-Moting decided the game, converting a cross in the 74th minute to make it 3-0.
