Werder Bremen were hit with another setback in their fight for the Europan League ranks as the Green-Whites lost their away match against Stuttgart Friday night 4-1 after leading 1-0 on the 31st game day of the Bundesliga. Markus Rosenberg gave Werder a 1-0 lead but scores by Christian Gentner, Martin Harnik (2) and Cacau gave Stuttgart the victory.
Ignjovski for Boenisch
Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf made one change to his starting line-up with Aleksandar Ignjovski replacing the suspended Sebastian Boenisch. Werder were lucky in the third minute that Julian Schieber could not use his chance to beat Tim Wiese. At the other end, Marko Marin was unable to overcome Stuttgart keeper Sven Ulreich after 14 minutes.

Trailing 2-1 at the break
Werder grabbed the lead in the 25th minute as Marin sent a fine cross into the box where Rosenberg was well-placed and struck home to make it 1-0. Schaaf's team did not have long to enjoy the lead as Stuttgart equalised in the 37th minute with Wiese having no chance against Gentner's perfectly taken shot for a 1-1 game. Wiese had to grab behind him again in first half stoppage time as the keeper stopped Georg Niedermeier's header but Harnik was there to pounce on the loose ball for a 2-1 Stuttgart lead at the half.
Harnik makes it 3-1
Werder struggled to find their game in the second half as well and Stuttgart were the better side. The game was all but decided when the former Bremen player Harnik scored his second goal to make it 3-1 after 53 minutes with Harnik taking advantage of some confusion in Werder's defence.
Cacau finishes Bremen off
The Green-Whites never really got into the game after that either and were unable to get past Stuttgart. In the end, Werder did not do enough in the game and Cacau's goal in the 89th minute finished off a clear 4-1 loss, resulting in a big loss in the race for the international ranks.
