Werder Bremen continued their strong play at home with a convincing 4-1 victory at home over Wolfsburg on the 16th game day of the Bundesliga. The Green-Whites won their seventh game in eight home matches with goals by Sokratis, Claudio Pizarro, Markus Rosenberg and Marko Arnautovic. Marcel Schäfer scored a consolation goal after falling behind 4-0.

Sokratis scores against Wolfsburg

Deserved half-time lead

Head coach Thomas Schaaf made four changes in his line-up with Tim Wiese returning for Sebastian Mielitz while Lukas Schmitz, Markus Rosenberg and Florian Trinks replaced Aaron Hunt, Marko Marin and Marko Arnautovic. The Green-Whites came up with a perfect start, grabbing the lead in the 18th minute with Sokratis striking home the rebound after Wolfsburg keeper Diego Benaglio stopped Claudio Pizarro's header off a free kick to make it 1-0. Trinks missed a golden chance to double the advantage in the 39th minute, hitting over the crossbar in a one-on-one situation with Benaglio. Pizarro showed the young Trink how it's done, running onto a throw-in, dancing through the Wolfsburg defence and beating Benaglio for a 2-0 lead in the 45th minute, which was also the half-time scoreline.

Rosenberg, Arnautovic score

Wolfsburg appeared to score in the 46th minute but the guests were ruled offside. The Green-Whites pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 55th minute with Rosenberg fending off Schäfer and then beating Benaglio to the far left post. Rosenberg nearly made it 4-0 after 68 minutes but hammered his blast off the post. Arnautovic however took care of business with the fourth goal of the game in the 71st minute as Pizarro fed the Austrian, who then beat Benaglio. Bremen once again failed to keep a clean sheet as Schäfer scored a consolation goal in the 86th minute.
