Werder Bremen came up with another disappointing away performance in the final match of the year and the end of the first half of the Bundesliga, losing 5-0 at Schalke and spending the winter in fifth place after 17 game days. Raul scored a hat-trick for Schalke while Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Jan Klaas Huntelaar also tallied for the Royal Blues.
Prödl for Sokratis
Head coach Thomas Schaaf made one change to his line-up with Sebastian Prödl playing for the suspended Sokratis. And the coach had to watch along with the 61,000 fans on hand as his team once again was harmless, without passion and altogether disappointing away from home.

2-0 deficit at half
The Green-Whites were down 2-0 after just 20 minutes following some unnecessary mistakes by the defence, which could not get Schalke's Spanish star Raul under wraps. The Schalke striker was on target in both the 16th and 20th minutes, laying the foundation for the Werder loss. Schaaf's team was uncertain after the early deficit and could not really put together any offensive attacks. And Schalke led 2-0 at halftime.
Arnautovic enters
Schaaf reacted in the break and brought in Marko Arnautovic for Prödl, giving the Green-Whites a few more ideas on offence. Arnautovic and Claudio Pizarro had but missed chances to pull a goal back. And once Raul tallied a third time to make it 3-0 after 63 minutes the Green-Whites were defeated for good.
Poor second half
Papadopoulos made it 4-0 in the 67th minute and Huntelaar scored goal number five of the night for Schalke after 70 minutes. Werder's disastrous finish to the first half of the season was complete. And once again, Bremen were handed a poor and disappointing defeat away from home.
