Werder Bremen continued their dominance over Cologne at home with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory on the 12th game day of the Bundesliga. After the Green-Whites fell behind 2-0 in the first half, Claudio Pizarro scored a hat-trick in the second half to give Werder the victory. Christian Clemens and Lukas Podolski scored for Cologne, who saw Henrique Sereno get red-carded in the second half...
Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf made just one change with Marko Arnautovic returning from his red card suspension to replace Markus Rosenberg. A sold-out crowd at Weser Stadium saw their Green-Whites once again come up with a bad start as Clemens headed in a long diagonal pass from Podolski for a 1-0 lead after just three minutes. Aaron Hunt's goal in the 10th minute was disallowed as it was ruled offside. Schaaf was unsatisfied and made two substitutions after 37 minutes with Rosenberg and Philipp Bargfrede coming on for Mehmet Ekici and Lukas Schmitz respectively. But Cologne doubled their lead in the 45th minute on a counter attack as Clemens sent a long ball to Podolski, who beat Werder keeper Tim Wiese to make it 2-0. And that was the score at half time.
The Green-Whites had a strong start to the second half as the ball landed at Pizarro after some confusion in the area and the Peruvian striker struck a side-volley and it was only a 2-1 lead after 49 minutes. Pizarro scored his second goal after 54 minutes from the spot after Sereno was red-carded for taking down Rosenberg in the area. Cologne were actually down to nine players after 74 minutes as Geromel went off injured and the Cologne coach Stale Solbakken had already made three substitutions. The Green-Whites were patient and finally got the winner on a third goal by Pizarro to make it 3-2 in the 86th minute after Rosenberg had headed on Hunt's cross to Pizarro at the far right post.
