Werder Bremen waited until the final minute of stoppage time to grab a 2-1 victory on the seventh game day of the Bundesliga at home over Hertha Berlin, who played the final 37 minutes with only nine players. Adrian Ramos scored for Berlin while Claudio Pizarro was the match winner with two goals for Werder. After the victory, Werder are second on the table behind Bayern Munich.

Claudio Pizarro scores twice against Berlin

Early deficit

Werder coach Thomas Schaaf replaced the suspended Tim Wiese with Sebastian Mielitz in goal with Lukas Schmitz filling in for the injured Sokratis. The 41,000 spectators at Weser Stadium saw a nightmare start for the Green-Whites, who fell behind 1-0 after just three minutes. Raffael raced past Schmitz down the right side and crossed to Ramos, who beat Mielitz from eight yards out.

Pizarro equalises

Werder needed a few minutes to get over the shock of the early deficit but Schaaf's team fought their way back into the game more and more. And the 1-1 equaliser came in the 23rd minute as Clemens Fritz's cross was headed in by Pizarro. Werder had a chance to take the lead after 34 minutes but Aaron Hunt's shot hit the post and Marko Arnautovic just missed with a long range blast, with the game tied 1-1 going into the break.

Two yellow-reds for Berlin

Werder Bremen gained a two-man advantage in the second half after Christian Lell was sent off for his second card in the 57th minute and Ramos was booked a second time after 63 minutes. The Green-Whites pushed forward looking for the winner but struggled to use their two man advantage. Pizarro appeared to score in the 81st minute but the goal was disallowed and Schaaf was banished to the tribunes for arguing. Werder appeared to be destined for a draw until Pizarro displayed his scoring qualities yet again three minutes into stoppage time, heading in the 2-1 goal off a corner kick for the victory.
