Werder Bremen suffered a 3-2 loss at Hannover in the "Small North Derby" on the 8th game day of the Bundesliga. Marko Arnautovic and Claudio Pizarro scored the goals for Werder, who finished the game with 10 men after Arnautovic was sent off with a red card. Mohammed Abdellaoue tallied all three goals for Hannover. Despite the defeat, the Green-Whites remained in second place on the table due to a better goal difference.

Sokratis in action

Early goal conceded

Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf made two changes to his line-up with Sokratis replacing Lukas Schmitz in the back line and Marko Marin coming in for Mehmet Ekici in the midfield. Werder came up with the worst possible start as Philip Bargfrede caused a penalty in the first minute and Abdellaoue converted for the 1-0 lead.

Arnautovic scores

The showdown turned into an up-tempo match which went back and forth. Bremen watched Hannover launch a counter attack in the 38th minute and push the lead to 2-0 as Jan Schlaudraff fed Abdellaoue, who got away from Sebastian Prödl and then beat Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz. Schaaf's team pulled a goal back in stoppage time of the first half to cut the margin to 2-1 as Pizarro passed to Arnautovic, who scored an important goal from 17 yards out. And Hannover led 2-1 at the break.

Exciting end of the game

Werder came out of the changing room with plenty of steam and nearly equalised in the 48th minute as Pizarro struck the post. Hannover's Christian Pander hit the framework just two minutes later. Hannover pushed the lead to 3-1 at the 60-minute mark as Abdellaoue scored after a header pass from Lars Stindl. Ekici came on in the 67th minute and struck the crossbar with a free kick in the 76th minute. Werder went a man down in the 78th minute as Arnautovic was shown a red card for his attack on Sergio Pinto. But Bremen pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute with Pizarro hitting home a pass from Clemens Fritz. But Werder could not force in the equaliser in the exciting final minutes of the 3-2 defeat.
