Werder Bremen started the new 2011-12 Bundesliga season with a home victory as the Green-Whites beat Kaiserslautern 2-0 in front of 41,400 spectators at Weser Stadium. Markus Rosenberg scored both goals for Werder.
New acquisitions in starting line-up
Head coach Thomas Schaaf relied straight away on new acquisitions Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Andreas Wolf and Lukas Schmitz in the starting line-up while Markus Rosenberg and Lennart Thy started in the attack for the Green-Whites. Werder had a strong start with Thy (5th), Marko Marin (9th) and Rosenberg (10th) all having good chances - though all went unused.
Werder better
Werder remained the better team with Schaaf's team owning more of the run of play. Bremen however were lucky not to have fallen behind after 30 minutes as Ivo Iličević's header went just wide of Tim Wiese's framework. Wiese made a superb save seven minutes later on Christian Tiffert's shot to keep the game scoreless. And the match went into the break even at 0-0.
Chance for Marin
Schaaf brought on Mehmet Ekici for Philipp Bargfrede to start the second half. Marin had another chance in the 48th minute after a mistake in the Lautern defence but he did not connect cleanly and it was still scoreless.
Rosenberg scores
Werder once again had luck in the 56th minute with Iličević beating Wiese but striking only the crossbar with his shot. Bremen proved more efficient just minutes later and Rosenberg made it 1-0 in the 60th minute. Lautern keeper Kevin Trapp was unable to hold Schmitz's long distance shot and Rosenberg hit home the rebound. Rosenberg struck again in the 81st minute with his second goal. Wesley raced past a Lautern defender and crossed to far post where Rosenberg was there to nod in to make it 2-0, deciding the game. Werder came up with the perfect start to the season with three important points at home.
