Werder Bremen lost their away match against Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 on the second game day of the Bundesglia through Michal Kadlec's goal in the 85th minute. After two weeks, the Green-Whites are eighth on the table with a victory and a defeat for three points.

Werder on the defensive

Head coach Thomas Schaaf made three changes to his starting line-up with Sebastian Prödl replacing the injured Andreas Wolf while Wesley and Mehmet Ekici started for Philipp Bargfrede and Marko Marin respectively. Werder faced a lot of pressure from the very start and Bremen keeper Tim Wiese made a superb save in the 13th minute on Renato Augusto's shot.

Sokratis in action

Good chance for Thy

At the other end, Lennart Thy was fed a fine pass by Sokratis but was too hurried and wasted the opportunity to put the Green-Whites in the lead. Bremen did well thereafter dealing with Leverkusen and even had a number of good scenes. But the score was even at 0-0 going into the break.

Wiese with a good stop

Schaaf made two changes after 61 minutes with Claudio Pizarro and Marin coming on for Ekici and Thy. The match went back and forth with both teams going for the victory - though they left a number of chances unused. Marin could not capitalise on a fine action after 73 minutes and Wiese made another fine stop minutes later, getting in the way of a dangerous free kick by Kadlec.

Kadlec scores

It appeared that both sides were satisfied with the scoreless draw in Leverkusen. But Werder conceded the decisive goal five minutes from time. Kadlec headed Gonzalo Castro's corner initially against Eren Derdiyok but the ball landed back at Kadlec and the Czech defender beat Wiese from short distance for a 1-0 lead after 85 minutes. It was bad luck for Werder, who dropped their first Bundesliga contest of the season.
