Werder Bremen continued their strong form in their fight against relegation with a 3-1 victory at Nuremberg on the 27th game day of the Bundesliga. Sandro Wagner scored two goals for the Green-Whites and Claudio Pizarro tallied once. Ilkay Gundogan scored the goal for Nuremberg, who finished the game with 10 men after Timothy Chandler was sent off for his second booking.

Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf made three changes to his line-up with Petri Pasanen replacing Sebastian Prödl (torn tendon) in the central defence while Wesley started for yellow suspended Philipp Bargfrede and Marko Marin took the place of Florian Trinks. Both teams started the game cautiously though Werder had the better chances early as Nuremberg keeper Raphael Schäfer made fine saves against Torsten Frings (14th minute) and Wagner (16th). The Green-Whites pulled ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute from the spot after Pizarro was tugged on the jersey by Philipp Wollscheid. Wagner struck his penalty into the lower left corner. Nurnberg equalised 1-1 after 30 minutes as Gundogan's blast was deflected off Per Mertesacker and past Tim Wiese. And the teams went into the changing rooms deadlocked 1-1 at the break.
Schaaf did not make any substitutions at half-time and was happy to see his team pull ahead 2-1 in the 50th minute. A poor clearance attempt went to Pizarro, whose shot deflected off Nurnberg's Andreas Wolf. Nuremberg were close to equalising again after 69 minutes but Rubin Okotie's shot struck the side netting. And the hosts went a man down with 18 minutes left as Chandler was booked a second time for his tackle of Tim Borowski. Petri Pasanen nearly decided the game after 74 minutes but his header went just inches wide right. Wagner did the job in the 89th minute, making it 3-1 on his second penalty goal and fourth goal in three games. Nuremberg keeper Schäfer appeared to take down Pizarro in the box, setting up Wagner's spot kick. The victory pulls Werder to 32 points - four points clear of the relegation zone.
