Werder Bremen failed to hold onto their lead and played to a 1-1 draw at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 26th game day of the Bundesliga. Sandro Wagner gave Werder the lead but Dante scored the equaliser for the guests. Despite the late and unexpected equaliser in stoppage time, Werder were able to improve to 12th place on the table.

Werder coach Thomas Schaaf made just one change to his line-up with Clemens Fritz returning in place of Petri Pasanen. The Green-Whites started the game in front of 40,500 spectators at Weser Stadium with loads of pressure as Gladbach keeper Logan Bailly barely fended Wagner's header off the left post in the third minute.

Claudio Pizarro in action

Bremen had three more chances before taking the lead in the 39th minute. Gladbach lost the ball in the midfield and Claudio Pizarro fought his way through the right side before crossing into the box where Wagner headed in at the far right post for a 1-0 Bremen lead. Bremen nearly doubled the advantage a minute before the break but Tim Borowski's strike blasted off the crossbar and Sebastian Prödl's rebound shot went across the mouth of the goal. And Werder led 1-0 at half-time.

Dante equalises in stoppage time

Neither side created much offence early in the second half. Schaaf tried to change the dynamics of the game in the 58th minute by bringing in Marko Marin and Marko Arnautovic for Wagner and Florian Trinks. And Marin forced Bailly into a fine save on a counter attack push forward in the 79th minute.

Gladbach finally made a charge in the final five minutes with Bremen keeper Time Wiese making a superb stop on Marco Reus in the 86th minute. Arnautovic nearly decided the game in the 89th minute his shot hit only the right post. Gladbach made the Green-Whites pay for their failures and struck the equaliser two minutes into stoppage time as Dante headed home Juan Arango's free kick from the right side to make it 1-1.
