Werder Bremen secured a spot in the Bundesliga next season, avoiding relegation thanks to a 2-0 victory at home over freshly-crowned league champions Borussia Dortmund on the 33rd game day of the season. Mikael Silvestre and Claudio Pizarro scored the goals for the Green-Whites, who now have 41 points for 12th place with one match left.
The only change to head coach Thomas Schaaf's line-up was Sandro Wagner coming in for Marko Arnautovic in the attack. And the Green-Whites came up with the perfect start as Silvestre gave Werder the lead 1-0 after just six minutes, hitting home a poor clearance attempt from 15 yards for his first Bundesliga goal. Bremen nearly made it 2-0 in the 13th minute but Marko Marin's blast from 16 yards went off the left post. Dortmund failed to create much offensive attack in the first half until just before the break as Petri Pasanen - who was playing his last home match for Bremen - had to clear a dangerous ball from Marcel Schmelzer after 43 minutes and Silvestre knocked away a Schmelzer cross just seconds before half-time, giving Werder a 1-0 advantage at the break.
Dortmund had more run of play in the early going of the second half including Lucas Barrios's chance at the 54-minute mark. But the Green-Whites began taking control of the match and Marin missed a chance after 63 minutes. Pizarro showed Marin how it's done, striking home a left footer from the edge of the area just inside the near right post to make it 2-0 for Werder after 64 minutes. Marin nearly struck again just two minutes later but his shot went just left after a great through ball from Pizarro. Dortmund had a couple of chances in the end through Lukasz Piszczek in the 81st minute and Mats Hummels just over the bar in the 89th minute.
