Werder Bremen took a huge step in avoiding relegation fight in winning 3-1 at St. Pauli on the 31st game day of the Bundesliga. The Green-Whites are nine points clear of a relegation spot as Claudio Pizarro scored two goals and Markus Thorandt tallied an own goal after Fin Bartels had given St. Pauli the lead. Werder, who have not lost against St. Pauli in 33 years since August 1977, extended their undefeated streak to eight games.

Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf made one change in his line-up as Philipp Bargfrede came on for the injured Tim Borowski. Bremen had a slight advantage in the early going with Pizarro blasting off the right post in the 13th minute for the Green-Whites. But Pauli went ahead 1-0 after 29 minutes on their first chance on Bartels' goal after a pass from Ralph Gunesch. Werder failed to regain control of the run of play after the Pauli goal and Bremen trailed 1-0 at the break.
Bremen came out of the changing room more aggressive offensively and knotted the game 1-1 in the 50th minute on an own goal. Bargfrede streaked down the goal line right of goal and crossed into the middle where Thorandt deflected the ball into his own net. Bremen keeper Tim Wiese needed a great save in a one-on-one situation against Gerald Asamoah after 52 minutes. The game went back and forth with Sandro Wagner shooting just over in the 58th minute and Charles Takyi doing the same for St. Pauli four minutes later.
The Green-Whites took the lead 2-1 in the 73rd minute through Pizarro, who headed home Torsten Frings' corner. Pizarro finished off St. Pauli with another goal just 109 seconds later in the 74th as he ran onto a through ball from Marko Marin and poked past keeper Benedikt Pliquett before hitting home for a 3-1 lead.
