Werder players worked up a heavy sweat at the end of the training camp Friday morning in Zillertal with intensive interval runs before and after the tactical training discussion. All of the spectators in the crowd at noon felt sorry for the players in the 34 degrees Centigrade heat.
Once the players fell to the ground after their hard work, the fans broke out in applause. And head coach Robin Dutt was so impressed with his team's discipline that he gave every player a congratulatory handshake on the pitch. "They really went after it. That was perhaps the most intensive session of the first two weeks. We really worked here for two hours. It's not very cool and everyone has heavy legs from the last few days," said Dutt.
The good impression from the last session was indicative of the whole past week in the Tyrol Alps. "It was a successful training camp all around," said manager Thomas Eichin. "It was really nice here. The training conditions were superb. We really felt good here and the guys worked hard and good. But they always had fun doing the work."
Dutt also praised his players' commitment, saying Fritz, Petersen and co. have earned the Saturday off. "Anyone I catch doing any sports tomorrow, if that's table tennis or beach volleyball, they're going to get it," said Dutt. "The guys should use the day off to regenerate. No running, no football. That's an order."
The Werder players are at it again on Sunday with a test match at VfL Osnabrück (6 p.m.).
