His father Andrzej did it. Between 1993 and 1994, Andrzej Kobylanski played two seasons in Germany's top flight at Cologne and then worked his way to the Bundesliga again between 2000 and 2003 with Energie Cottbus. His son Martin is trying to follow in his footsteps. The young striker has played with Werder Bremen for a little more than a year. What began with the U19 team could become the first top highlight of his career on Saturday with the professional side in the Bundesliga in Hamburg. Martin Kobylanski has good chances of making the Green-Whites' Bundesliga roster for the first time. But who is this young man who has played for both the German and Polish youth national teams? Here an overview.
"Personally I hope to establish myself within the team and work my way into a major part of the team. Long term, of course, I want to make the jump to the Bundesliga," said Kobylanski just a few months ago in the February edition of WERDER JUNIOR.
Should Kobylanski be sitting in the team bus to Hamburg Friday afternoon, he will certainly talk to his father about his first impressions with the professional team. "At the moment, he is strongly involved in his new career as director of sports at Polish top flight side Korona Kielce. He would like to watch all my games but that just won't work out. But we usually talk on the phone after the matches and he gives me important tips. He is my greatest supporter but also my biggest critic," said the younger Kobylanski.
Father Andrzej has an 88-match lead on a Bundesliga career. Martin Kobylanski could see his first step completed by Saturday at 5:20 p.m. with hopes of catching him in a couple years.
