Stressful but equally exciting - sums up the past few days for Özkan Yildirim. Just hours after Werder's successful Bundesliga opener away to Eintracht Braunschweig (1-0), „Ötzi" took up the invitation from trainer Horst Hrubesch to join up with the German ‚Under 21's‘ for their game against France in Freiburg on Tuesday evening (0-0). The youngster is due back in Bremen on Wednesday.
The currently stressful situation is something the 20 year old is happy to take on: „The invitation to the ‚Under 21's‘ was confirmation for me of the work I'd put in in recent months. I hadn't been with the national team at all for quite some time because of a long-term injury so I was doubly happy to be nominated this time," explained "Ötzi" to WERDER.DE.
The midfielder was all the happier that his first nomination for the ‚Under 21's‘ was also to see him included in the starting eleven. „Horst Hrubesch informed me on the morning of the game. Playing for the national team is something very different to playing for your club. You are seen as one of the best 20 players in the country within your age category, you represent your country and everyone is watching - that's great feeling," commented Yildirim, looking back on a successful evening at the ‘Mage Solar Stadium' in Freiburg. "It did me good to play for ninety minutes again. The trainer was satisfied and I am too".
