For Özkan Yildiri, there's just not enough time. The 21-year-old last stood on the pitch in a competitive match in March earlier this year. Then he was forced out for a long time with groin surgery. Since then ‘Ötzi' has been fighting for his comeback and said on his official Facebook page that his return is getting closer.
Yildirim last stood on the pitch for Werder at the home match on 26 January 2014 against Eintracht Braunschweig. The midfielder wore the Green-Whites jersey the last time for the U23s last March and even scored the goal in the 1-0 win at Neumünster. But then the German junior international injured his groin, which meant an operation, the end of the season as well as a long rehab break. Yildirim saw the light at the end of the injury tunnel at the beginning of this season. "I was already at the training camp in Zillertal and had hoped maybe to get back into training," said the 21-year-old. But it didn't happen. The lingering pain kept ‘Ötzi' out of action. While his teammates went out to the training grounds, he had to work out in the weight room. And there haven't been a lot of improvements.
But the offensive weapon doesn't want to even think of giving up. "I never let myself get down because I am a fighter. This phase has taught me and showed me some things. But soon I will be able to be active again," he said on Facebook. "The fact is that I am extremely looking forward to football and everything around it. I will be back stronger and give everybody a lot of happiness. I'm fighting for that every day."
