When head coach Robin Dutt welcomes his players to the start of training on Thursday 26 June 2014, one player will already have the first training sessions of the 2014-15 season behind him. Özkan Yildirim has been working on his comeback for a number of days now after undergoing groin surgery in April.

While the other Werder players were taking their well-deserved holidays, ‘Ötzi' was working up a sweat on the training grounds. The Green-Whites youth talent was also working on his rehab program in the Weser Stadium weight room. In addition to strength drills and sessions on the bike, he also went through special treatments on the operated groin.

9 days of holiday - and no more

But Yildirim did not totally have to go without a holiday. The 21-year-old flew together with his girlfriend to Mallorca for nine days. But he didn't take the trip until he had achieved his personal training goal. "For me it was important to not take holidays until my rehab was far enough that I could run normally again," said Yildirim.

And it was the last days off that the striker will grant himself. Even though Yildirim went through running training and the first passing drills, he will not be ready to work with the team at the start of the preparations. "I will still need some time for that, but the work with the rehab team makes me confident. I will be top fit again soon," said ‘Ötzi' positively.
