Defender Andreas Wolf has joined Werder Bremen with immediate effect. The 29-year-old Wolf, who was captain last season with Nuremberg, signed a two-year contract with option for a third season in Bremen. The former German youth international passed his physical Sunday morning and then trained with the team.

Wolf will travel with his new teammates in the afternoon to Norderney and complete the first Werder training camp. "I am happy that everything went so quickly. The query came in last week and I wanted to take this chance. I would like to take the next step here and take over responsibility in a young team," said Wolf before going into training.

Manager Klaus Allofs cleared up the final details of the transfer Saturday and thinks the addition of Wolf will be an important component for the team. "We are happy that we were able to kill two birds with one stone with this acquisition. We picked up an important reinforcement for the defence, which we really need in our situation. And we received a player without a transfer fee who has already proved himself as captain of a Bundesliga team and that he can be an important component for a team," said Allofs.

Wolf was born in Soviet Leninabad (Tajikistan) and came to Germany in 1990 as a Russian-German emigrant. In 1997, he transferred from SpVgg Ansbach 09 to the youth ranks of Nuremberg, where he played for the second team starting in 2000 and made his first appearances with the professionals a year later. Over the years he matured into one of the most reliable defenders in the Bundesliga. He went through the German national team youth ranks from the U15s to U21s and was one of the leaders in Nuremberg's German Cup title winning team in 2007. Wolf also collected international experience with the club in the 2007-08 UEFA Cup competition. He had been the Nuremberg captain for three seasons. Last season he played 30 Bundesliga matches and scored three goals.
