SV Werder Bremen signed a new goalkeeper in bringing in Raphael Wolf from Austrian top flight SV Kapfenberg. The 23-year-old German keeper, who was born in Munich, was the top keeper for the Austrian club and was praised for his performances.
The keeper received a three-year contract until 30 June 2015. "He fits perfectly into our requirements profile. He is a younger, motivated keeper who also has a certain experience and has proved some consistency. Raphael has a big potential for development and will provide good competition for Sebastian Mielitz," said manager Klaus Allofs.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf believes Werder are well served with the signing of the 23-year-old Wolf. "It's good that we were able to convince Raphael Wolf in favour of Werder. We now have very good candidates for the position between the posts. It will be a competition situation at a high level, which is what we wanted," said Schaaf.
The keeper himself heads into his task in the German Bundesliga with respect and confidence. "I absolutely wanted to come back to Germany and the offer from Werder is the best thing that could happen to me. It's a good club with lots of tradition and a lot of success. We want to build on that," said Wolf.
Wolf started his career in his Bavarian home state at FSV Pfaffenhofen. In July 2004, the keeper moved as a B-youth to Hamburg, where he mainly played with the U19s until 2007. Wolf was on the professional side during the 2007-08 season and played in 25 matches for Hamburg's second team in the Regionalliga North. He made his professional debut on 18 July 2009 with SV Kapfenberg in the first round of the Austrian Cup. He advanced to the starting keeper and played in 104 Bundesliga matches in the past three seasons.
