Bad news for Werder fans as Franco Di Santo will not be available for SV Werder Bremen in the North Derby. The striker suffered a ligament injury to his right knee in training on Wednesday, according to an MRI on Thursday, meaning Werder coach Viktor Skripnik will not have the services of the Argentinean this Sunday at Hamburg.
"Of course it's a setback for us. Franco was in a very good form. We would have liked to have had him there. But we have good alternatives who have our full trust and are hungry to play. I am certain that we will collectively compensate for the absence," said Skripnik.
Sebastian Prödl, Zlatko Junuzovic and Ludovic Obraniak all had a visit with the medical staff as well. The Austrians Prödl and Junuzovic received regenerative treatment after their intensive international matches while Obraniak complained of thigh muscle problems. While it's questionable if Prödl can return to training on Friday, Obraniak will definitely not train with the team on the weekend but rather continue to receive treatment.
Davie Selke and Luca Zander meanwhile were back at team training. Both of the German U20 national team players completed the entire session without a problem. Cedrick Makiadi also returned from his national team duty and will be back in training on Friday.
There was good news though about Philipp Bargfrede as the midfielder went through much of the team training. After the athletics portion of the session, the 25-year-old also took part in game formation drills.
