The 4-0 home victory was also the day of the young wild ones for SV Werder. To the surprise of many, three true youngsters were in the Green-Whites' starting line-up with Davie Selke, Levent Aycicek and Janek Sternberg And then Maximilian Eggestein made his Bundesliga debut when he was subbed in after 83 minutes, making him the second youngest Bundesliga player in the club's history after Thomas Schaaf.
"Sometimes you just have to throw the young players into the deep end and see if they can swim. Today was a good opportunity for that and they all did very well," said head coach Viktor Skripnik about his team. The players thanked their coach after showing their stuff at Weser Stadium and writing their own personal stories during the 90 minutes.
The most experienced of the young wild ones is Davie Selke. But today was a premiere for the striker as well as his goal to make it 2-0 was his first Bundesliga goal at home in Weser Stadium "Today is a very, very nice day for me. It was my first goal here. It's an unbelievably nice feeling," said the U19 European champion.
What an afternoon for Janek Sternberg. After some good play with the Werder U23s and some good performances in training during the week, the 22-year-old was picked to start in the defence at leftback - and his professional debut left a strong impression. He was solid in the back and had good actions up front. "When the coach told me that I would be playing, my pulse was going out of control," admitted the leftback. "It was amazing to run out into Weser Stadium in front of so many people. I am overjoyed. You start playing football to one day play in the Bundesliga. I am trying to enjoy it now. For me, a dream has come true."
Starting debut in the Bundesliga, topped off with a nice goal. What an evening for Levent Aycicek. "It was a like a dream, really just awesome," beamed the 20-year-old playmaker. He has worn the Werder jersey since he was 6 years old and he not only proved during the match that he is a true Werder man with his goal to make it 4-0 10 minutes before the final whistle but also after the match. "As a fan, I once saw Tim Wiese climb up on the fence and today I was up there myself. I was a little frightened at first but then I felt really honoured," said Aycicek after celebrating the victory with the fans.
