Güle güle Belek! After eight days of winter training camp in Belek, Turkey, the Werder Bremen group left Antalya airport at 1 p.m. local time (CET +1) on board sky Airlines flight 1899 to Bremen. And the second half of the Bundesliga begins just four days later with their home match against Hoffenheim. That is reason enough to take stock after the week of preparations on the Turkish Riviera. "We had extraordinary conditions there and were able to work well, intensively and effectively," said a satisfied head coach Thomas Schaaf. "We worked with a good structure, commitment and lots of pleasure."

The results of the three test matches however were less than positive - a 1-1 draw against Trabzonspor, a 4-1 loss versus MSV Duisburg and a 3-1 defeat against Eskisehirspor. "The first game against Trabzonspor was certainly good, but explaining how the losses against Duisburg and Eskisehirspor came about to someone who did not observe the training sessions is difficult, since the pure results were not positive," said Klaus Allofs. "The game against Eskisehirspor was a stark contrast to the training days as we could not really confirm our good impressions," said the aggravated Werder manager about the loss in the last test match. "Of course we wanted to win the game, but that did not happen. Therefore we have to work very concentrated in the coming days," said Schaaf, looking forward. "We have to give our all in every session."

But the Werder players cannot be accused of not giving their all during the sessions in Belek. "Everybody worked very focused and tried to improve in their own way," said Torsten Frings on Sunday.

"But the odd player has things to make up," said Schaaf. Among them is new acquisition Denni Avdic. "He still has to make up a bit fitness-wise since he had such a long break. But we are working on that," said the coach, who was very satisfied with the first training days of the Swede. "We already saw some good things in training, but in the game he was missing a bit here or there. But we knew that ahead of time and therefore it's not surprising," said Schaaf. Despite the poor results in the test matches, Schaaf's general opinion of the training contests was positive. "We took a step forward."
