Under the watchful eyes of Werder professionals Tim Borowski and Sebastian Boenisch, Werder's U17 youth team lost a dramatic final for the German juniors championship. Only a sensational goal from some 30 yards out by Cologne's Lukas Scepanik was able to stop SV Werder Bremen's U17 side Sunday afternoon in extra time of the final of the German championship. Viktor Skripnik's team lost the highly dramatic final 3-2 in extra time at the Platz 11 grounds at Weser Stadium.
Werder manager Klaus-Dieter Fischer praised the players after the game. "Whoever played at one time on the pitch knows what every player today did. In the end it was clear that this final would be decided by a very unfortunate or extraordinary action. And both happened. Congratulations to Cologne. But I think both clubs can be proud of these youngsters. We are looking forward to having these guys in the U19s. We will nearly completely move them on to the older age group. This today was a good signal for the entire talent development at Werder," said Fischer.
