Who doesn't know the feeling? The year is just about over and you already start thinking about the new year. How will it be? What would you like to do differently? Even head coach Robin Dutt and his players were confronted with this question at the start of training in 2014. And there proved to be some very different ideas for the new year.
Robin Dutt sees the situation of the new year very pragmatic. "I am not the type of guy who has new year's resolutions. I am more someone who tries to think about every day anew," said the coach. While it may not be a resolution, Dutt still provided a goal for the team in 2014. "For me, 21 points in the second half would be okay. We are not talking about any point total internally with the team but Thomas Eichin and I are of the same opinion that we could live with 21 points."
The 21 points would give SV Werder 40 points at the end of the season, which usually would be enough to stave off relegation. And centre back Sebastian Prödl had an idea on how that would work out. "Now we need to play a better half than in the first half of the season. It's clear that we conceded too many goals. Despite our current ranking, we saw that you can move up the table quite quickly. My goal is to have nothing to do with the relegation as quickly as possible. And I am putting my personal goals for 2014 below those of the team," said Prödl.
Nils Petersen, who missed a number of weeks at the end of last year with a partially torn ligament, hopes to remain injury-free in 2014. "Good health is the most important wish in the new year. Of course, it would be great for me if I could play all 17 matches in the second half," Petersen said with a wink. "For me as a striker, it's naturally just as important to score as many goals as possible and thereby help secure lots of points."
