Werder Bremen failed to finish off the first half of the Bundesliga season with a victory in losing 2-1 at home against Kaiserslautern on the 17th game day. Aaron Hunt scored for Werder Bremen but Srdjan Lakic tallied two goals for Kaiserslautern. Both teams – Alexander Bugera for Kaiserslautern and Sandro Wagner – had players shown yellow-red cards in the final 18 minutes.

The only change Thomas Schaaf made to his line-up from the loss in Dortmund was Marko Arnautovic replacing injured striker Claudio Pizarro while Hugo Almeida remains out suspended. And the Green-Whites were caught napping on Kaiserslautern’s very first push forward as Christian Tiffert’s cross was headed home by Srdjan Lakic after just 23 seconds for a 1-0 Lautern lead in the first minute. Lautern controlled play and Schaaf brought on striker Sandro Wagner for defender Petri Pasanan after 26 minutes. And the move paid off as Werder knotted the game at 1-1 after 34 minutes. Marko Marin was taken down in the box by Mathias Abel and Aaron Hunt converted the penalty. Werder were the better side after that but could not score again and the game was 1-1 at half-time.

Schaaf made no changes at the break and Lautern once again pulled ahead – and again through Lakic, who poked home Ivo Ilecevic’s cross to make it 2-1 after 52 minutes. Bremen keeper Tim Wiese was forced to make a fine save to stop Lakic from scoring again in the 54th minute. Schaaf subbed in another striker after 62 minutes with Lennart Thy coming on for Philipp Bargfrede. Kaiserslautern saw a man given his marching order in the 72nd minute as Bugera was shown his second warning. Wagner could not score on a dangerous cross by Marin after 81 minutes and Bremen could not use the man advantage and saw Wagner get sent off with his second warning with four minutes left as Werder have won just once in their last eight games.
