Thomas Eichin on Thursday afternoon confirmed holding talks with Juventus Turin. The Werder manager accepted an invitation by the Italian record champions to discuss a possible co-operation.
"Juventus are looking for a club with whom they can work together in certain areas. And Werder Bremen would be a good partner. We have a good reputation and the transfers of Luca Caldirola and Santiago Garcia, both of whom came to us from the Italian league, peaked additional interest," said Eichin. Both sides could profit from a co-operation. "Juventus are looking for a partner where players can be brought to another level. That would be the case by us. And of course we would have an advantage because we have to explore different avenues and come up with creative transfers. So you can certainly profit from such a big club," said Eichin. "In Italy, they have a different training model. Because development ends at the U19 level and there are no U23 teams, the top clubs have a lot of players under contract. There are also some on hand who will not make the jump directly to Juventus but who would be very interesting to us."
A possible collaboration shall not however affect Werder's own youth development. "We will not be blocking our youth development work with this and have five youngsters from Juve playing. This is just a small building block in becoming successful again. Nothing more, nothing less," said Eichin. And it's also not set in stone. "It was a nice first talk, a meeting to get to know one another. But we should not overestimate this meeting. It was all about maybe swapping ideas with a big club. It's important for us to get a foot in the door and we want to keep on it. We have set up another meeting to get to know each other a bit better," added Eichin.
