Davie Selke was tired but happy Saturday afternoon when he entered the Weser Stadium press conference room. The interest had increased in the freshly-crowned U19 European champion, who had only returned to Bremen from the tournament in Hungary Friday evening.
"I would personally rather have it that the hype was about the team. We played a great tournament as a team and I was just part of it. I was only able to perform so well because the team worked well collectively," said a humble Selke, who discussed his impressions from the last weeks with the journalists on hand.
"Those were some very turbulent but mainly exciting weeks. It was an honour for me to play for Germany. I am happy that it went so well but I will need some time until I have processed everything," said Selke, who was the top scorer of the tournament with six goals.
Werder head coach Robin Dutt and his coaching staff watched closely how Selke and Co. played. "That was must-see viewing. At the time we were at the training camp in Zillertal and of course followed the games intensively. The coaching staff, the players, the doctors and physios - everybody was crossing their fingers and were happy for Davie," said the Bremen coach, who hopes the youngster can use the success as a push forward. Selke will be able to use that extra motivation starting Monday at training with the Werder professionals. "Davie is now an integral part of the professional team," said Dutt.
