The arrival of Eljero Elia on Norderney fuelled more speculation that the Green-Whites this year would move more away from their midfield diamond. And the first training sessions have shown what's in store. Offensive pressure should come from the wings!

On the trip to Norderney, head coach Thomas Schaaf showed his hand a little bit and chatted on the ferry about the question of his system. His motto is flexibility on the pitch is the goal! "I was never set on one system but rather always looked to see which formations fit best with the qualities of the players," said the Bremen coach. "Ideally I would play one way one week and another the next. In our coaching circles we talk about such things daily," said Schaaf.

One system that will be tested out is the 4-3-3 system with one central forward to two outside strikers. "If you have players who enjoy coming from the side, look for one-on-one situations, are good set-up men and can also shoot, then that would be an option," said Schaaf. Regardless of the system, important for Schaaf is that "we have enough people in the opponents' box and that we are present in front of their goal to convert assists."

With Elia and Marko Arnautovic, Werder actually have two wingers who have already played together. They played a couple years ago at FC Twente Enschede in this same constellation, which makes Arnautovic all the happier about the current development. "Back then I came in from the wings and I know the position very well from the national team," said the Austrian. "But now I am in Bremen and have played up front for two years and I can do that quite well. I am anxious to see which tactical formation wins over."
