Journalists often use statistics and streaks to get the quotes needed from head coach Robin Dutt for the stories in the newspaper the next day. The Bremen coach was also confronted at yesterday's press conference with a Werder negative streak against the up-coming opponents Schalke.
It's nothing new for Dutt to list statistics at press conferences. Looking ahead to the match at Schalke, there certainly is a negative streak as Schalke have won the lost four matches against Werder and are undefeated in their last six matches against the Green-Whites. Werder's last victory against Schalke dates back three years ago when Bremen won 2-0 in May 2010 in Gelsenkirchen.
Despite this fact, the coach was unimpressed and talked about a new trend within the team. "If I had to worry about all the streaks that were brought up in the last few weeks, then we wouldn't have picked up a single point. Luck has had it that not one of these streaks continued. Maybe that's a new streak, that whenever there is a streak it will be broken," said Dutt.
The Green-Whites actually have proven to be pretty good streak breakers. Here are some of the examples. Before the Freiburg match on the ninth game day, there had not been a goalless match this season. Werder as we know played to a 0-0 draw against Freiburg and snapped the streak.
Dutt and his team played the last match day against Hannover 96. Dutt had not won in the previous five match-ups against Hannover. That changed with the Green-Whites winning 3-2.
The goal for the up-coming road match at Schalke is clear - to snap another negative streak.
